The Dominican Republic is one of those countries where having fun is a priority, and life is seen as a constant quest for fun. The people’s joie de vivre is palpable in the way they interact even in non-leisure situations like the workplace, and during actual leisure time the pursuit of pleasure is tackled with seriousness and determination. People will stay at home and receive visits from friends, or congregate in their barrio meeting points, usually a colmado (corner grocery store that doubles as the local watering hole) or, in smaller towns, the central square or parque central. Animated conversation (known as la chercha) and rowdy games of dominoes, washed down with cold beers (frías), loud music, and spontaneous dancing, are all part of the fun.
